The 2022 Summer Blockbuster – LAWNDALE Keeps Rolling On!

Were you a kid in the 60s and 70s? Then you’ll love this book. It’s chock full of short stories about growing up during that period in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A time when life was about playing outside, exploring the woods, riding bikes, and playing games in the street.

There were no cell phones, internet, or social media. The news came wrapped in a rubber band and landed on your doorstep thrown by a kid on a bicycle. Nobody wore helmets when they rode their bikes and nobody used seatbelts. You could disappear all day and your parents didn’t even know where you were. Just as long as you made it home in time for dinner. There were only three channels on TV and a gallon of gas was fifty cents.

Travel back to a simpler time with the author as he spins tales about his life growing up in Lawndale, a small suburb of Philadelphia. You’ll see the world through his eyes from kindergarten to high school as he navigates his childhood. From the struggles of adolescence to the fun he and his friends and family had as kids.

As an avid reader with a penchant for immersive storytelling, I was eager to delve into the pages of “LAWNDALE” by Charles Wiedenmann. And let me tell you, this memoir did not disappoint. From the moment I cracked open the cover, I was transported back in time to the vibrant streets of Northeast Philadelphia in the tumultuous decades of the 1960s and 1970s.

What struck me most about “LAWNDALE” is its remarkable ability to capture the essence of a bygone era with unparalleled authenticity. Through a series of poignant anecdotes, vivid descriptions, and heartfelt reflections, the author paints a vivid portrait of life in a tight-knit neighborhood on the cusp of change.

One of the book’s greatest strengths is its evocative prose and rich storytelling. Every page is infused with nostalgia and reverence for a simpler time, from the hustle and bustle of everyday life to the joys and challenges of growing up in a rapidly evolving cityscape. It’s as if the author reached into the depths of their memory and pulled out a treasure trove of vivid recollections to share with readers.

But “LAWNDALE” is more than just a trip down memory lane; it’s a deeply personal journey of self-discovery and resilience. As the author navigates the trials and tribulations of adolescence, they grapple with themes of identity, community, and the enduring bonds of family. Through their eyes, we witness the triumphs and tribulations of a generation coming of age in a world in flux.

However, its universal appeal truly sets “LAWNDALE” apart. While rooted in the specific time and place of Northeast Philadelphia in the 1960s and 1970s, the themes explored in this memoir resonate with readers of all ages and backgrounds. Whether you grew up in a bustling city or simply long for a glimpse into the past, there is something in these pages for everyone.

In conclusion, “LAWNDALE” is a heartfelt and beautifully written memoir that captures the essence of a bygone era with warmth, humor, and unwavering authenticity. It’s a testament to the enduring power of memory and the resilience of the human spirit. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking an immersive journey through the streets of Northeast Philadelphia and a poignant reminder of the timeless bonds of community and family.

I grew up only 2 blocks from the author but I am 10 years older. We went to the same Elementary & Jr High Schools. We had many of the same interests and experiences. I lived with my parents in Lawndale from 1951 to 1975 when I got married and left for Bucks County. I still own the house I grew up in on Magee Ave. I have so many great memories of growing up in Lawndale. Oh, and I must thank the author for making the book’s print large enough for me to read.
