A Perfect Circle

As I approach my 62nd birthday this August, I find myself reflecting on the simple joys of life – the ones that often go unnoticed amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday living. Here I am, a few months away from this milestone, happily sweeping the floor at the hardware store where I work. With each stroke of the broom, I can’t help but be transported back to a time when I was just a teenager, earning my keep as a pool boy at the El Morro motel in Wildwood, New Jersey, back in 1977.

The memories flood back, and I can’t help but smile at the parallels between then and now. Though my career path has taken me down many different roads, from corporate offices to retail floors, I realize that life has a funny way of coming full circle. What once seemed like menial tasks now bring me a sense of fulfillment and contentment that I never could have imagined.

As I sweep, I’m reminded of the importance of humble work – of doing a job that gets results and serves the community. There’s a certain nobility in performing tasks that may seem mundane to some but are essential to the smooth functioning of our daily lives. And as I gently cruise into my retirement years, I find myself embracing this simplicity with open arms.

In a world that often seems chaotic and fast-paced, it’s the little moments of quiet reflection and simple pleasures that bring me the greatest joy. So here I am, happily sweeping away, grateful for the journey that has brought me to this moment and hopeful for the adventures that lie ahead.
