Tales of Rock – Pattie Boyd

I loved writing this post!

Precious few of us will know what it’s like to hear a hit song on the radio and be able to say, “That’s about me!” If we do, we can only hope it’s not on a Beyonce track called “Uber Driver Smelled Like Piss.”

Even fewer of us will ever know what it’s like to have a former lover pen a top-40 song about our time together. Yet, there are still hundreds, if not thousands, such people walking the earth right now. These are the anonymous men who wish they had a platform to rebut Taylor Swift or Adele, or the unknown woman who tried to tell The Weeknd that he was probably having a stroke. It has to be flattering regardless of how you’re portrayed — whether your track falls into the “Your Body Is A Wonderland” or “You Oughta Know” category, at least you know you made an impression.

But within that select group is an even more elite subset of people who’ve gotten around enough that they became the subject of multiple hit songs, from different artists. This is the story of one such woman who inspired at least three of the most iconic love songs ever and is the subject of at least five songs overall (that we know of!). These tunes combined to sell tens of millions of copies and spawned dozens of covers — she is literally one of the most sung-about humans in the history of the species, and her name is Pattie Boyd.

Let’s start with “Wonderful Tonight” by Eric Clapton, one of the most romantic songs ever.

It appears in shows and movies like Miami Vice, Friends, Captain Phillips, The Story of Us, and countless crappy Idol type shows. Every time it’s in a soundtrack, it’s to signal the deep infatuation between two characters. A more historically accurate use, however, would be signaling the love between a character and someone else’s wife.

See, Clapton wrote the song in the late ’70s for Boyd, his then-girlfriend. Reportedly, he was waiting for her to get dressed one night and instead of complaining that she should have started getting ready 30 minutes ago, he just wrote a classic song.

This was not a new occurrence for her, though, and her romantic history with famous songwriters was a long and tumultuous one. Years earlier, in 1968, George Harrison of the Beatles had written the song “Something” for his then-wife … also Pattie Boyd:

That’s “Something” as in “Something in the way she moves … ” aka, another of the most romantic songs in history. Harrison later changed his story and denied the song was for Boyd, but you would, too, after what happened next.

See, Harrison and Clapton were good friends at the time, which is why it was awkward when Clapton fell madly in love with Harrison’s wife. He even wrote a song for her. No, not “Wonderful Tonight,” this was still years earlier — we’re talking about “Layla,” the epic seven-minute rocker that, thanks to Goodfellas, you can’t hear without picturing dead mobsters in a ditch somewhere.

So, that’s another one of the greatest love songs ever. Upon hearing it, Boyd … didn’t care much for it, apparently, because she didn’t respond to Clapton’s advances, sending him into a four-year heroin binge. Admit it: How many of you out there are now sad that you never got the chance to know this woman?

It was only after that, when her marriage to Harrison had completely fallen apart, that she finally hooked up with Clapton. But wait, there’s more! According to Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones, he and Harrison slept with each other’s wives in the ’70s and Wood wrote the songs “Mystifies Me” …

And “Breathe on me” about Boyd as well.

Look, let’s just assume every love song is about Pattie Boyd unless you hear otherwise.

Maria – Chapter 9 – A Drink with my Muse

I’m working at Mac mart and killing it. I love working there. It’s been an interesting transition from the tanning salon. I committed myself to the salon for two and a half years hoping some kind of equity position but that never materialized.

I”ve been killing it and I’m feeling the over load. My daughter and my new boss has warned me of working too much , but I love to stay busy.

But by working more at Mac Mart and less at the salon I actually have time off.  Something I haven’t had for 2 years. It’s odd for me to be free to do nothing at 5pm at night.

My friends ask me why I haven’t been at happy hour and I tell them I haven’t seen them at the bank.

It’s a joke but it actually rings true.

I’s nice to see $6,700 in your checking account.

But I’ve given up my shifts at the salon and relinquished them to the girls I’ve hired. I could take them but the ladies need them and I have the shifts at Mac Mart.

But with these shifts, there are days when I work all day and I finished at 5pm.

I’m not used to this. For the last 2 year I’ve been locked into 8pm at night.

I can actually go to an event and have someone work for me during my shift.

Our season is over and I’m down to one girl a night and I can focus on Mac Mart.

So I actually end my Thursday at Mac Mart at 5pm knowing I can go to Square 1682 because there’s and event there.

It’s a beach themed event. They have all of these drink specials at the outside tables. My favorite bartender on Earth is there. (Roman – Rock and Roll bartender)

It’s hot. Philly is hot from 3pm to 6pm, but the sun is setting and the event is nice. the music is good thanks to Roman. He’s singing some songs and its beautiful.

It’s a little alien. After working every night at the salon until 8pm every might, I’m accustomed to entering the night after that. My social life began at 8:30 or later, and my good friends were forced to accept that.

But tonight I’m finished at my job at 5pm and it’s nice. I worked the morning and afternoon at Mac Mart and it was lovely. I love my new career.

But to leave a job at 5pm after 2 years is a bit weird. I had texted a few people to let them know I’m off.  The Stewardess, a friend and finally,…. the muse, Maria. (See: Maria – Amore en Vano)

I decide to text her: “Happy Hour today?”

“I could technically meet for a drink. I have to work at 6 tonight. So random lol.”

“And I leave the office at 3pm.”

“I”ll be at Square 1682 a little after 5pm”

“I’ll see what I can do”

Classic Maria. Elusive and gorgeous. I have to expect she will NEVER come to meet me.

I know she’s busy, and I took a risk. I know I’ll never hear from her, but that’s our relationship.

Maria inspired the blog Phicklephilly. She can do what she likes. Be bad. Never get back to me. I’ll love you anyway, because you’re my inspiration and got me writing again after 10 years of nothing.

Maria you are special.

You can do whatever you want. Since it’s inception 2 years ago, phicklephilly has had over 970 posts, and over 51,000 views and thousands of followers.

You can do no wrong, dear.

Thank you.

I roll out of work and make my way east to Square 1682 two blocks away.

It’s a beach themed event outside the bar. They’ve roped off the street and my man Roman is pouring special cocktails and singing songs.

Industry people are there and I know so many of them. It reminds me of my past life in that world and I’m so happy to see them all.

I had texted several women that night to meet me just for the sake of sharing a drink. I had gone there just to see Roman and hear him sing after 2 years of absence.

I was sitting in the shade sipping a free cocktail with a gentleman I’m friends with from a fine Italian restaurant in the area.

I’m surrounded with lovely people I know from my past life in the bar industry. It’s great, but then I look at my phone and MARIA is calling me.

I take the call and am dumbfounded that I’m getting a call from my muse. She says she’s inside the bar.

I tell the people I’m sharing the shade with I have to go.

The muse is calling.

I go inside and the bar is empty.

But my lovely Queen is sitting at the bar waiting for me.

I am so happy to see her.

She looks gorgeous as always. Her hair is chocolate ribbons and her face is as lovely as a brand new day as always.

She’s been ghosted by her shitty boyfriend that sadly used my friend as a side piece and that breaks my heart because I adore Maria. This clown was able to be intimate with someone I really care for and then discarded her.

But that’s how it works in this city sometimes. We live and we learn.

Even I know now that all of my muses have been toxic and I can never date my inspiration.

But in this moment, Maria has appeared and I’m so happy to see her. The inspiration for Phiklephilly.

She just got her Bachelors of Liberal Arts in Marketing and graduated from Temple University.

I know she’ll that she’ll choose a handsome husband at some point. As she should. But there will always be the guy that wrote a blog that loved her hospitality at Misconduct and thought she was beautiful and charming with a pair of lovely legs that always loved her from a distance.

I enter the bar. My bar.  My favorite bartender is playing outside, singing songs and pouring cocktails.

I am inside with my Queen with my most hated bartender in the city. Dee. Just a ball of Awful. Fire her today.

It doesn’t matter, I’m with the muse.

Maria gets a tart fruity $7 cocktail and I get a heady one in a copper pot. I”m just stupid happy to be with the inspiration of phicklephilly.

10 years. I write nothing

Maria. Phicklephilly is created

Never date or get mixed up with you muse.

It was beautiful as the sun went down on the fun even outside, and I was in my bar with my queen for a moment.

I looked upon her. She said she went to the beach for a day. Her skin was caramel and beautiful.

She had to get to her job, but is still looking for a marketing gig now that she’s graduated. I’m shopping her resume to some of my contacts in the industry.

But sadly as hard as I push her resume to my industry contacts I keep getting the same response.

A career waitress at 32 with a BA in marketing will only yield a job in sales.

I’ve worked in sales my whole life and have been wildly successful, but sales in itself is an almost imossible nut to crack.

I want so much for maria, but based on what I know about the cold stark world of corporate  life, I don’t know if there is anything for my dear out there at this point.

I’ll keep pushing…

I’m so proud of her and Maria has come so far.

I am grateful for every hug she gave me.

I will always love Maria.

There’s just something about her….

Maria – Chapter 8 – I Get To See You Again

Maria, my muse and inspiration for this blog has agreed to meet with me again for lunch. I have a bottle of wine for her to donate to her cause. I want to do anything I can for Maria.

Here’s the rub. It’s March. Winter is on its ass as my father would say here in Philly, but you never know what March can bring. Maria is trying to get her degree and busting her butt to get her studies in order but she is leading the charge on this fund-raiser.

The event is on Sunday. It’s Friday and she’s running around trying to get all of the last-minute details done before the event.

And make time for lunch with me.

I leave my apartment in Rittenhouse. Lorelei is asleep because she works at night too.

I step out onto Pine street with my umbrella and it’s a snow storm. Giant flakes falling and blowing. Insane. It’s not cold enough for it to stick but it is just a mess outside.

This is not good. Maria could bail. I get that.

I’m ready. We’re meeting at Marathon on 16th and Sansom. I know the owner. He gave me a $25 gift card and I’m ready to burn it on my unemployed muse.

I weather the storm and make my way to the restaurant.

I know everyone there and they welcome me. They put me at a nice table at the window on Sansom.

I shoot video of the crazy weather and send it to my ex girlfriend Michelle but she doesn’t respond.  She lives in San Francisco now and I ask her if she can guess where I am but all I get is crickets. (See: Michelle – A Brand New Day)

Maria says she’s on her way.

I’m just trying to dry out and my umbrella is soaked, but I’m just happy I’ve been able to spend time with her.

Maria shows up quickly and looks amazing. I only say this because even if my muse is disheveled she will always look amazing to me because of what she means to me.

Maria leaves her little winter hat on the entire lunch and it looks so cute. But like I said. She can do no wrong at this point.

I know Maria doesn’t see the weight of this. Oblivious and happy for the donations. I am honored to oblige. I’m sure that Maria has no idea of the depth that she has inspired my art. She’s just a regular girl making her way in Philly. But somehow through her actions and her impression on me she has inspired phicklephilly.

Maria is checking her phone and upset that her coworkers may not be pulling hard enough on this event to raise gifts and money.

I totally get it. I’ve managed people before and you always want them to be like you. But they can never be you. That’s the catch with management. You’re always frustrated because your staff can never be as good as you.

It’s a never-ending cycle.

Maria is so frustrated. She goes with the tuna albacore wrap. I hope she likes it and doesn’t get sick.

I destroy my favorite, the barbecued chicken sandwich with fries. I like that Maria picks at my fries. I love sharing anything with her.

It’s a lovely moment. The snow is falling and we’re at a nice table at the window.

I’m having lunch with the woman who I was once infatuated with that inspired me to write again after 10 years. There’s nothing special about her. I think she’s beautiful. She’s charming and has lovely legs. (My usual attraction) She’s dating the owner of the company she works for, her familiar challenges. Maria is 3 months away from getting her degree in Marketing, and now she’s stuck looking for a serving job somewhere in Philly to pay the bills.

My muse has hit another wall but continues to march forward and find her way.

My unrequited love for Maria is classic phicklephilly fodder, but what if my realization that Maria is not meant for me but for a greater purpose?

What if we see Maria in a year successful in her career and through with all of this restaurant bullshit?

I’ve worked in media in this city for years. I have loads of contacts and would do anything to help her.

Maria liked her tuna albacore wrap. She ate half of it and didn’t get sick. Our server at Marathon was amazing and I burned my $25 gift card that had been given to me by the owner because he works out at our gym.

So even though Maria ordered a glass of champagne our bill was $10.

I was happy to give her the bottle of wine because it was a gift and I knew I’d never drink it.

I’m in a relationship with Cherie. I love her with all of my heart, But I did feel the romantic rush of being with Maria for a third encounter. I know it means nothing to her and she’s busy with her own survival and her own romantic entanglements, but it was just sweet to be with Maria.

My inspiration.

She can do no wrong.

I’ll text her job offers and she won’t get back to me.

It’s okay.

That’s Maria.

(She actually did!)

Thank you for the inspiration.

We step out into the snow. It’s not laying. Maria is angry because she has so much to do today based on her event.

Maria hugs me and I’m grateful for the attention. I hope her event is a success. We’ve given a gift card, and I’ve bought a ticket and donated a bottle of wine.

I hope it helps.

Maria – Chapter 7 – Ghosted

Hello phicklephilly followers. This is Maria’s story about what happened to her dating her boss.

I have the greatest respect for my my muse that inspired phicklphilly. I am just happy just to have lunch with her, but here is her tale of one of her romantic encounters.

We’ll leave it at that. I’m honored the one woman that inspired me to finally start writing again after 10 years was cool enough to share with me a dating story.

I think what this guy did to Maria is really shitty. Sad how one man’s inspiration can be another man’s folly.

This week, we have Kristin* (Who is my Maria the muse that inspired me to write phicklephilly) who was ghosted by one of the owners of the restaurant she works at after they’d been seeing each other for a month:
Hmmm… where should I begin?
I had started a new waitressing gig in Philly, and I was super excited abou…

Maria – Chapter 4 – Another Try

Back in August on my birthday I got a text from Maria.

“Happy birthday!!”

“Aww! Thank you Maria!”

Last week against my better judgement I decided I wanted to see Maria. This would probably be a complete waste of time and money, but I wanted to see what she was up to and phicklephilly needs content.

Wednesday

“Happy hour tonight?”

“Hey I had my internship now off to my night class unfortunately.”

“No worries! I have been working a lot and had a free night. What’s a good day/time I could catch up with you for an hour.”

“Probably Mondays or Wednesdays in Old City.”

“Perfect. I’m not working at night those days. Next Monday for a happy hour?”

“Maybe for one drink. I have a huge test that Tuesday.”

“Would lunch on Wednesday work better?”

“Probably.”

(She seems thrilled)

“1pm in Old City or does noon work better for you?”

“I don’t know my workload until that day.”

“Alright, well then let’s do one drink in Old City Monday. It’ll be great to catch up. I have stories!” (Bold faced lie. Just seeing her out of curiosity and for the blog)

Sunday Night

“We good for a drink in Old City tomorrow?”

“Yea one.”

(Try to contain your enthusiasm, Maria)

Monday Morning

(7:30am)

“What time?”

(2:47pm)

Ahh Maria. Since I haven’t heard from you I assume something’s come up and I’ve already been invited to an event. (Bold faced lie. I’m just sick of waiting seven fucking hours for a response from her. By now I don’t even feeling like going to Old City) But no worries. Is there another day and time we can catch up?

(2:50pm WTF?)

“Hey sorry I was running around for our press conference. No big deal. I probably should take that extra time to study anyway. I’ll check my schedule and get back to you.”

“No worries. Look forward to catching up on all the news.”

How much do you want to bet I never hear from her again? I think that would be a sucker’s bet.

(Sigh) Still love her anyway.
